Unfortunately, I have bad news at the beginning of the year.
There was a big earthquake in Japan yesterday and still now many people need help. I was worried about my parents, so I talked to my father on the phone. My parents were fine.
年明けから悲しいニュースが続いています。
昨日、日本で大きな地震があり、今も多くの人が助けを必要としています。私も両親のことが心配だったので、父に電話しました。両親は大丈夫でした。皆様のところは大丈夫でしたか？

Tanka is a short poem in Japanese. It consists of 5/7/5/7/7 (31) syllables.

I drank wine and sake.

I was in a good mood.

Since the first day of the new year,
頭痛と雑煮 ずつうとぞうに(7)
I have had a headache and a Zoni.*
*(O)Zoni is a Japanese traditional soup containing mochi (rice cakes). Many Japanese people eat on New Year’s Day.

When I looked at my cell phone

I got the breaking news.
日本の地震 にほんのじしん(7)
(We’ve had enough) Earthquakes in Japan,
無くなれすぐに なくなれすぐに(7)
(so) No more (earthquakes) please.
