Several bloggers answered this question. When I watch movies or dramas, I just enjoy them as entertainment. I have never judged characters. In my opinion, villains make heroes and main characters more attractive.

For example, Doraemon is popular in the anime series. Gian (big boy) and Suneo (rich boy) bully Nobita. But they are friends and often care for each other. If Gian and Suneo weren’t Nobita’s friends, the story would not be fun.

The other example is Kuromi, Sanrio’s mascot character. She was designed to rival My Melody (the main character) in 2005. She becomes aggressive easily but has a soft side.

They are in contrast. My Melody is a traditional feminine character, and Kuromi is a free spirit. I think Kuromi is an important character in the modern diverse society. I like Kuromi more than My Melody… I don’t like very cute characters.

I really enjoyed your perspective! 😊 I agree that villains and imperfect characters often make a story much more interesting because they create contrast and give the heroes something to overcome.

Your examples of Gian and Suneo are especially interesting. They may bully Nobita, but their friendship and occasional caring nature make them more than simple “villains.” That mixture of mischief, conflict, and affection makes the story feel more human.

Yes, trends may change over time, but Doraemon and his friends have been the same.

Since I was a kid, I have preferred characters that other girls didn’t choose. Maybe my standard of cuteness (kawaii) is different…😅
