Sunday was Mother’s Day. What did you do?
日曜日は母の日でした。みなさんは何をしましたか？
I am a mom, so I went to my parents-in-law’s house with husband and kids in the evening. We ate cake together. One day before, my kids asked me, “Mom, what do you want tomorrow?” I said, “I don’t want anything. I just want to sleep…” They said, “OK”. But I woke up early the next day.
私も母親なので、夜に家族と夫の両親宅へ行って、一緒にケーキを食べました。前日に子供達から、「ママ、明日何が欲しい？」と聞かれたので、「何もいらないよ。寝たいだけ…」って言ったら、「OK」と言ってくれました。でも、翌日は朝早く起きることに。
The kids gave me handmade things. My son did his best and wrote a message in English. He is now practicing the English alphabet.
子供達からは、手作りの物を貰いました。長男は頑張って、英語でメッセージを書いてくれました。現在、アルファベットを練習中。
My second daughter gave me a handmade pendant. She is not so good at reading and writing (she often used to do mirror writing), but creative.
次女は手作りのペンダントをくれました。彼女は読んだり書いたりすることが得意では無い(以前は鏡文字をよく書いていました)のですが、クリエイティブ。
And I got a letter from my eldest daughter. When I opened it, I was surprised.
そして、長女からの手紙…開けた瞬間、ビックリしました。

I didn’t understand what the meaning of the last sentence was… She didn’t understand how to express her feelings. If she didn’t understand, how would I understand!? 🤣
最後の文章の意味が分からないけど..本人も書いてて、どう表現していいか分からなくなったそうです。本人が分からないのに、私が分かるわけ無いじゃん！？🤣
In Japanese, it sounds like “I wish you could be a better mom.” After that, she added, Couldn’t. On the other hand, “There is no better mom than you.” I think the first translation is negative, but the second translation is positive.
日本語にすると、「もっと良い母親になることを望んでるよ」的な感じです。一方で、後にCould’ntがあるので、合わせると「あなた以上の母親はいないよ」という意味にも受け取れます。1つ目の訳は否定的になりますが、2つ目の訳は肯定的になります。
I usually understand English in context. Anyway, I was happy.

In the past, I was always confused when someone asked me negative questions in English. For example,

English(英語)→ No, I don’t know. Japanese (日本語)→ Yes, I don’t know. うん、知らないよ。
English(英語)→ Yes, I know Japanese(日本語)→ No, I know. いや/ううん、知ってるよ。
English is a difficult language…
