日本のジェスチャー：比較編
Do you know that gestures have different meanings in different countries.
それぞれの国で、ジェスチャーの意味が違いことをご存じでしょうか？
For the first three years after I came to America, I worked in an upscale Japanese restaurant in Florida. At that time, I was interested in the restaurant business because my father was a sushi chef and owned his restaurant for a long time in Japan.
アメリカに来て最初の3年間、私はフロリダ州にある高級日本食レストランで働いていました。父が寿司職人で日本で長い間自分の店を経営していたため、当時の私はレストランビジネスに興味がありました。
I worked in one of the authentic Japanese restaurants and I learned about how difficult it is to run a food business and navigate cultural differences.
そして、日本人が経営する日本食レストランで働きながら、フードビジネスの大変さや文化の違いについて学びました。
In Japan, I didn’t think much about the meanings of gestures. I had thought that gestures were universal until I worked in a restaurant. In fact, I was wrong.
日本に居た頃、ジェスチャーの意味についてそれほど考えたことがなかったです。レストランで働くまでは、ずっとジェスチャーは万国共通のものだと思っていたので。でも、実際には、全然違います。
For example,
例えば、
➀ V sign :
Vサイン
It means “Victory” and “Peace” in America.
アメリカでは、「勝利」や「平和」を意味します。
Many Japanese people like to do a V sign when they take a picture.
多くの日本人が写真を撮る時に、Vサインをします。
In other countries, people may use it as the means of insults.
他の国では、侮辱的な意味で使うこともあります。
② Heart and Love :
愛情表現
In America, Japan and many other countries…
アメリカ、日本、多くの国では、これが「愛」や「ハート」との意味ですが…
This gesture is “Love” in South Korea.
韓国では、これが「愛」のサイン。
③ Come here :
こっちへ来て/おいで
This gesture means “Come here” and “Come in” in America.
アメリカでこのジェスチャーは、「こっちへ来て/おいで」や「どうぞ」という意味です。
On the other hand, this gesture means “Come here” and “Come in” in Japan.This gesture means “Go away” in America.
一方で、日本ではこのジェスチャーが「こっちへ来て/おいで」や「どうぞ」という意味です。アメリカではこのジェスチャーは、「こっちへ来るな/あっちへ行け」という意味です。
My first day of work at the restaurant, I did this gesture to customers. Then I didn’t know the meaning of it in America. Customers looked at my face sadly and left the restaurant.
レストランでの初出勤日、私はお客さんにこのジェスチャーをしました。その時の私は、アメリカでこのジェスチャーの意味を知らず。お客は悲しそうに私の顔を見て、店を出て行きました。
I wondered why… did I do something wrong?
あれ、どうして…私何か悪いことをしたかな？と思っていたら
The restaurant owner came and said to me, “Don’t do it to the customers again. We would lose our customers.”
レストランのオーナーさんが来て、私に言いました。「お客さんにそのジェスチャーをしてはダメだよ。お客さんを失うことになるから」と。
…I apologized to him.🙇🏻♀️
…レストランのオーナーさんには謝りました。🙇🏻♀️
