Green Tea (1)

Green tea is one of the world’s popular drinks. Do you like it?

In the 12th century, the Buddhist monk Eisai (栄西) studied in China and brought tea seeds and knowledge of tea to Japan. Green tea was first used for medicinal purposes. He explained the health benefits of tea, and more people started drinking green tea.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, green tea was connected with the Japanese tea ceremony. Tea master Sen no Rikyū (千 利休) taught the spirit of tea ceremony. The core principles are harmony (Wa 和), respect (Kei 敬), purity (Sei 清), and tranquility (Jaku 寂). Have you ever heard of “Ichigo-Ichie” (one time, one meeting 一期一会)?

Today, Japan is renowned for producing high-quality green tea leaves. Next time, I will write about the famous regions and tea varieties.
