Fireworks

Hello,

How was your weekend? Last Saturday was Independence Day in the US, so I rested during the weekend. On Saturday night, we watched the fireworks. We live near a Native American reservation. The area has different fireworks and tax laws due to tribal sovereignty. In Florida, consumer fireworks are legally permitted only on July 4 (Independence Day), December 31 (New Year’s Eve), and January 1 (New Year’s Day).

At first, I was surprised that the state allowed fireworks only on a few days in the year. In Japan, small fireworks are legal year-round. In summer, fireworks festivals are held. When I was a teenager, I often played with handheld sparklers with friends on summer nights. One night, a police car stopped in front of us. The officer was watching us. He didn’t say anything, but we got his message. There are no specific rules, but public places generally allow fireworks until 8pm (at the latest, until 9pm).

What a delightful and thoughtful glimpse into two different cultures. I really enjoyed reading about your Independence Day weekend and how your experiences in the United States naturally brought back memories of summer evenings in Japan.

Your comparison of fireworks traditions was especially fascinating. It’s interesting how the same celebration—lighting up the night sky—can be shaped so differently by local customs and laws. The story of the police officer quietly watching you and your friends was wonderfully told.

Thank you. I am middle-aged now. I worry about how fireworks impact the environment…😅

        You’re most welcome! 😊

I completely understand your concern. As we grow older, we often become more aware of how our actions affect the environment and the world around us. It’s encouraging to see such thoughtful awareness. I hope future celebrations continue to become more beautiful while also being kinder to nature. Thank you for sharing your perspective
