Anywhere, but I would like to go to Cuba as a tourist.
A long time ago, my husband participated in a quiz competition. The quizmaster asked him many questions. One question was “What’s your favorite city?”
He replied without hesitation, “Nagoya in Japan!”
The quizmaster was interested in his answer and asked him to explain about Nagoya.
He said in front of the audience, “Nagoya is a beautiful city. It’s my wife’s hometown. That’s where we first met. She is sitting in an audience seat …”
After he said that, the audience turned to look at me. I was surprised but also happy. He also answered all quizzes correctly and won the prize (not money …).
After a while, I suddenly wondered why I’d never visited his hometown.
Once before, I’d asked him, “What’s your hometown like?”
He just said, “It’s a place where there’s nothing.”
I didn’t say anything more. Everyone has things they don’t want to talk about.
I’m not expecting a luxurious trip. I’d like to see the house where he grew up and the school he attended.
And I like Cuban food.
「もしどこにでも行ける無料の往復チケットがあったら、どこへ行きたい？」という質問ですが、私はどこでもOKです。でも、観光客としてキューバに行ってみたいかも。
ずいぶん前だけど、夫がクイズ大会に出場しました。司会者が夫に質問をしてて、そのうちの1つが、「一番好きな都市はどこ？」って。
夫はためらうことなく、「日本の名古屋！」と即答。
そしたら、司会者が興味を持ったらしく、「名古屋について教えてください」とか言って、彼が観客の前で説明。
「名古屋は美しい街。妻の故郷でもあります。そこで私達は出会いました。彼女は観客席に座ってて…」
そう言った後、観客が一斉に私の方をみてきて、あなたが彼の奥さん？的なリアクション。
最初はビックリしたけど、そう言ってくれたことは嬉しかったな。それに、クイズも全問正解して、ちゃんと景品をゲットしたから。お金じゃなかったけど …(笑)
しばらくして、なんで私は彼の故郷に行ったことがないんだろう？って思い始めるように。
「あなたの故郷はどんなところ？」って聞いたことがあるけど、彼は、「何もないところ」と一言。
それ以上、言えなかった。誰にだって、話したくないことってあるから。
豪華な旅行を期待してるわけじゃないし、なんとなく彼が育った家や通っていた学校を見てみたいなって。
それに、キューバ料理が好きだから。
