Share what you know about the year you were born.

Last time, I didn’t write what year I was born.

1980s…

I was born in 1983. This year, Tokyo Disneyland opened. The other major event was that Chuck Hull invented the 3D printer. The next year, he applied for a patent. I have a 3D printer at home.  A few years ago, I bought a cheap one for my hobby. It is really fun.

The patent is generally valid for 20 years. My uncle used to be an engineer and invented a special chair in the early 1990s. Although he applied for a US patent over 20 years ago, his name is still listed.

Between the 1980s and early 1990s, the Japanese economy was booming and growing at an average of 4 percent a year. It is called the “bubble economy.”

My dad was working as a secretary for a city council member at the time (after his uncle took over the sushi restaurant). He and his boss had known each other since they were children.

They had always worked together. They had connections to other politicians and support groups. They often took me to eat at fancy restaurants and stay at luxury hotels. We were also able to travel abroad because Japan’s economy was doing well.

My high school years were tough. Japan’s economy started to worsen, and my dad’s job became unstable.

In the early 2000s, I graduated from a Japanese university. Many young people have difficulty finding jobs.

Since I was a third-year university student, I have been working at the post office (as a seasonal employee, I started at 16). My position was not full-time. But I was making enough money for a living, and I had a chance to work full-time after graduation (and passing the exam).

My grades were fine. I was able to graduate on time, but I postponed my graduation for one year. I thought I should get skills and certificates to have a better life. To be honest, I started thinking that I was not suitable to be a homemaker. I wanted to be financially independent. Next year, I obtained teacher certifications (technically after graduation), and I studied in Spain. The same year, I met my husband in Japan.

My decision was not wrong. After moving to the US, I was able to get a teaching job.

There are significant differences between generations. Older people experienced Japan’s good time.

Well, everyone has good times and bad times.
