If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?

If I had the power to change one law, it would be to allow dual *nationality (citizenship) in Japan.

*Nationality in Japan and citizenship in the U.S.

Although I have lived in America for 17 years, I am still a Japanese citizen and a U.S. permanent resident.

There are some differences between U.S. citizens and permanent residents. For example,

  1. Citizens can vote in elections, but permanent residents can’t vote in elections.
  2. Citizens and permanent residents can work legally in the U.S. Citizens are eligible to work in federal government jobs, but permanent residents are limited to access to work in federal government jobs.
  3. Citizens can apply for a family-based immigrant visa, but permanent residents have limited options to bring their family.
  4. Citizens can re-enter the U.S. after living abroad, but permanent residents need to apply for a re-entry permit before leaving if they stay outside the U.S. for 1 year or longer.
  5. Citizens can obtain a U.S. passport, but permanent residents use passports from their country of origin.

My family has different passports.

  • My husband was born and raised in Cuba. Later he moved to America and became a citizen. Cubans can’t lose Cuban citizenship, so he has Cuban and U.S. passports (no Japanese passport).
  • I only have a Japanese passport.
  • After my kids were born in the U.S., I applied for their Japanese nationality. They have U.S. and Japanese passports (no Cuban passport), but they are required to choose one before they reach 22 years old (under the current law).

Some countries are politically related. International marriage is difficult. Well, the divorce could be worse.

The Hague Convention is also important if you have kids.

The Hague Convention | Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan

Important Features of the Hague Abduction Convention – U.S. Department of State

HCCH | Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction

Luckily, my friend is a legal expert. When I have questions, I get advice. Otherwise, I can’t understand all the laws. 🥴😅
