Experience, Wisdom and Creativity

Daily writing prompt
What do you think gets better with age?

Experience, wisdom, and creativity get better with age.

Now I am a middle-aged woman. Compared to when I was in my early 20s, I have more experience. For example, how to live abroad, how to change a baby’s diaper, and how to save money.

*Wisdom comes from experience and learning. I learned how to survive abroad, how to change a baby’s diaper quickly, and how to grow my personal savings.

* I chose the word “wisdom” instead of “knowledge”. Wisdom comes from experience and learning, while knowledge is gained through learning. There is another word, “experiential knowledge”. It is knowledge gained through experience.

Like pilots for flying internationally, some jobs require enough experiential knowledge. I have seen young (20s-30s) pilots for domestic flights, but I have not seen young pilots for international (between US and Japan) flights.

Artists may sometimes require experience. However, this doesn’t mean that mature artists are always better.

I like the Japanese novelist Watanabe Junichi (渡辺淳一). He passed away in 2014, but he published more than 50 novels.

He wrote different genres of books. One of his famous books is A Lost Paradise (失楽園), which was published in 1997. The book became a bestseller throughout Asia and was made into a film and a TV drama.

The story is about romance, a 54-year-old married former magazine editor loving an affair with a 37-year-old married typesetter. The last ends with their double-suicide.

I read it when I was a college student in Japan. My first thought after reading was just shock. The story was sort of erotic, but it was a beautiful romance.

The novelist described the love of a married man and woman as a beautiful world.

He was a medical doctor and was 64 years old when he published. He had enough experiential knowledge of love.

Infidelity is bad. But the novel is art and fiction.

Whether a good novelist or not is judged by readers.
