If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

  • Retard

I agree with the other blogger. I have never used this word. But one of the professors often used this word when I was an undergraduate student in America.

The first day of class, he said, “My name is XX. I teach this class. I am retired, not retarded,” and laughed.

What is so funny? I thought and saw other students. Nobody laughed.

The class was Leadership in Hospitality. The final assignment was a presentation about inspirational leaders in which each student picks one leader and explains his/her leadership style.

He didn’t say anything about the industry or ethnicity of the leader. So, I chose Akio Toyoda (豊田 章男), former president and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation.

On the day of the presentation, my classmates presented American political leaders and business executives. He gave feedback after each student finished the presentation. He was picky and sometimes criticized the student’s presentation.

When my turn came, I was a little nervous. To get a good grade, I showed PPT slides to explain why I respect the Toyota CEO.

After my presentation was over, he said to me, “Your presentation was fine. But I want to ask you. Why did you choose him? I don’t know him, and I didn’t understand how effective his leadership style is.”

I didn’t want to repeat the same class, so I politely said to him, “I don’t know much about American leaders. Toyota Motor Corporation was founded in my hometown and is now famous worldwide. I wanted to show other students how Toyota Motor Corporation became successful.”

He said nothing. Perhaps he didn’t like my comment. He gave me a C for this presentation. The next semester, I didn’t see his name. I don’t know if he retired or was fired. I didn’t respect him. 😠

I was just about to post a blog about that word. A lot of people don’t know this, but that’s a slur. It was used to make fun of sick people usually with down syndrome. Thanks for posting this!
