San Jacinto Monument

We visited the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site.

San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site：3523 Independence Pkwy, La Porte, TX 77571

Texas has a complex past. After Christopher Columbus discovered America, Spain controlled the land. I don’t know how many states Spain owned, but as far as I know, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah…maybe more.

By the way, St. Augustine in Florida is the first permanent European settlement and was founded in 1565.

After 1821, Texas became part of Mexico, and Stephen Fuller Austin brought Anglo-American families. In 1824, Mexico adopted a republic constitution. By 1830, there were more English-speaking Americans than Mexicans. In 1835, the Texas Revolution began.

After successfully winning at the Battle of San Jacinto, Texas declared independence from Mexico. In 1845, the state joined the U.S.

    I particularly enjoyed how you connected the story of Texas with the larger history of European exploration and colonization in North America. Your mention of St. Augustine, founded in 1565, provides an interesting reminder of just how deep the roots of European settlement in the United States really are.

      Thank you. To be honest, I studied the history of Japan and Spain, but I don’t know much about America. My children were born here, so we went on the road trip to see and experience what historical places look like 😊

      Thank you for your comment. Yes, Texas used to be an independent country called the Republic of Texas (1836-1845/46).
