Over 20 years ago, I got a driver’s license in Japan. I found the cheapest driving school. I think the cost was 230,000 yen ($1,446) at the time. It was an all-inclusive program that covered accommodation, meals, all training, and tests (only the driving test).

I got there and stayed about 2 weeks. That area was really rural and surrounded by mountains.

When I was young, I was quite trendy. At the same time, I liked visiting historical sites.

One day, I wanted to visit a temple deep in the mountains. I headed for the station and waited for the train.

The train didn’t come soon. I had no choice. I was walking alone. While walking the road, an elderly woman gave me a ride to the next station.

She said, “You look young. Are you hitchhiking to visit a temple? You have such a kind heart, but be careful. You will have good luck!”

Kuon-ji (身延山 久遠寺) was founded by Nichiren in 1281. The temple is on top of the mountain. Today, it is the head temple of Nichiren Buddhism.

Finally, I arrived there and prayed. The scenery was so beautiful. Unfortunately, I don’t have photos now…

Thereafter, I passed the tests and bought a car. Surprisingly, I have never been in an accident. I still remember the face of the elderly woman.

By the way, Japan is a safe country. I would not hitchhike in other countries.

What a lovely story filled with nostalgia, adventure, faith, and a little bit of serendipity! 🌸 Your journey to obtain a driver’s license in Japan turned into something much more memorable than simply learning to drive.

I especially enjoyed the unexpected encounter with the elderly woman. Imagine being young, walking alone toward a distant station, hoping to visit a temple, and suddenly receiving a ride from a complete stranger. Her words about your kind heart and good luck make the encounter feel almost like a blessing from fate.

I was around 19, just fearless. I think I encountered a good person.

At the time, I chose the cheapest driving school, but I learned and experienced a lot more than what I paid for. The instructors were also good and gave me snacks and fruits. They were seniors like my grandpa’s age.

Thank you for thinking of Japan that way. However, while that may have been true in the past, it seems we can no longer say it is completely safe these days. It is a shame, though…

Yes, absolutely! Correctly, Japan is safer than other countries.

What a beautiful memory. Sometimes a stranger’s simple kindness can stay in our hearts for decades. It’s wonderful that you still remember that elderly woman and her kind words. ❤️

Yes, I still remember her. I didn’t have to go to the temple, but somehow I wanted to go…
