My mom often said, “You would be a thief if you wrote your name in red!”
I don’t know the origin. Probably, once upon a time, there was a rule that criminals and prisoners wrote their names in red, and samurai wrote death threats in red.
However, I know the interesting fact. When people are still alive, their names are engraved in red on the gravestone. Some people buy gravestones in advance. After their death, red is changed to white.
The other example is Inkan (Hanko). It is a personal seal and used as a signature in Japan. The ink color is red. Red is not always a negative color.
As a kid, I remember hearing the word “thief” quite often. My mom repeatedly said to me, “You would be a thief if you lied!”
Getting older, I noticed that there are times when it’s OK to lie (called “kind lies”). Well, I am not looking for excuses. I am just sharing Japanese culture…

母はよく「赤色で名前を書いたら、泥棒になる！」と言っていました。
その由来は、よくわかりません。おそらく、昔は、犯罪者や囚人は名前を赤色で書いたり、侍が殺害予告を赤色で書くという決まりがあったから。
でも、おもしろい事実というか、生前は、墓石に名前が赤色で入ります。亡くなる前に、墓石を購入する人がいるからだと思うけど。その人が亡くなった後、赤色は白色にかわります。
もう1つの例は、印鑑 (はんこ) 。印鑑は日本で署名として使われるけど、朱肉は赤色 (朱色って言った方がいいかも)。だから、赤色が必ずしも悪いってわけではないみたい。実はこれ、私がずっと疑問に思ってることなんですが…
子どもの頃、「泥棒」という言葉をよく耳にしたのを覚えています。母が、「嘘をついたら、あなたは泥棒よ！」って繰り返し言ってたから。
でも、年を重ねるにつれて、嘘をついてもいい場合があることに気づいたというか。それは、「優しい嘘」と呼ばれるもの。一応書いておくと、言い訳をしているわけではなく、日本の文化を紹介してるだけです… (笑)
