Dinner is the largest meal of the day in Europe and the US. According to the article, that habit started with the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century. People had to work longer, so they started having a main meal once a day.
The word “breakfast” literally means to “break the fast” from the night before. I used to believe “breakfirst” was the correct spelling, but now I know that’s incorrect.
Lunch is the last arrival. Until the 18th century, lunch was a small amount of food.
In Japan, people started eating three meals a day around the Edo period (in the 17th and 18th centuries). They used to eat two meals a day. In 1657, a major fire (Great Fire of Meireki 明暦の大火) destroyed most of the city. To rebuild the city, many people worked hard and felt hungry.
