Last Sunday, we went to the supermarket and saw pumpkins. There are so many different types of pumpkins.

Pumpkin is called Kabocha in Japanese. Japanese pumpkins are a popular ingredient in soup and tempura (fried).

According to the article, pumpkins were one of the many foods used by the Native American Indians. They domesticated pumpkins and squashes more than 7500 years ago. In the 1700s, European settlers adopted pumpkins and cooked them.

During the fall and winter months, pumpkin pie is popular.

Are pumpkins a fruit or a vegetable?

Pumpkins are botanically classified as fruit and culinary vegetables. Squashes belong to the Cucurbitaceae, which is also known as the gourd family.  Cucumbers and watermelons are also the same family.

Wow!
