Over 20 years ago, I studied in Alicante. For the first month, I lived with a host family. But I felt uncomfortable living there and started looking for a new place. I wanted to move out as soon as possible. Three days after I posted, I received a message from someone asking for a new roommate. I replied and went to see the apartment. It was clean, inexpensive, and close to my university campus. I liked it but had to accept one condition.
- Living with male roommates
My Asian friends were concerned about my safety. I was worried, too, but I couldn’t afford to live with another host family. I had male friends in Japan, and I was living with my boyfriend before I came to Spain. So I decided to live with male roommates.
Spanish people are friendly. We soon became friends. One roommate was very helpful. He was a fluent English speaker, so he corrected my Spanish. Sometimes we ate together and shared music CDs. One day, I saw a picture of a beautiful girl. I was curious and asked him. The girl was his ex-girlfriend. He asked me about my past. I was in a relationship then, so I didn’t say anything. I was not the type of person to talk about my love life. After a short conversation, we watched a Spanish drama in the living room. Of course, nothing happened between us.
