What’s a piece of media (book, movie, song) that changed how you see the world?

“Stand by Me” taught me about friendship and personal growth. The story is based on Stephen King’s “The Body” (1982 collection Different Seasons). In the 1950s, four boys set out on a 20‑mile hike along the railroad tracks. On the way, they share hardships and personal stories.

In the 1990s, streaming video services and social media were not common in Japan. I went to the movie theater and video rental store to watch foreign movies.

When I watched the movie, I was 15 or 16 years old. I was a high school girl. I also liked the song.

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No, I won’t be afraid
Oh, I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darlin’, darlin’, stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand
Stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry
No, I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darlin’, darlin’, stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Whoa, stand now
Stand by me, stand by me

Darlin’, darlin’, stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand now
Stand by me, stand by me

Whenever you’re in trouble, won’t you stand by me?
Oh, stand by me
Whoa, just stand now
Oh, stand, stand by me

Song by Ben E. King

This year, the movie is celebrating its 40th anniversary. How will the world change in the future?

What a lovely and nostalgic reflection. Stand by Me is one of those timeless films that reminds us of the enduring value of friendship, courage, and growing up.

I enjoyed reading about your memories of watching foreign films before the age of streaming—it brings back the charm of a different era. The song is just as unforgettable, carrying a beautiful message of loyalty and standing by those we care about.

Thank you! 😊 At the time, I rented VHS tapes, not DVDs. Back in the day, life was different from now. But I enjoyed my life.
