「仕事は楽しいですか？」という質問なんですが、教える仕事なら「はい！」と答えます。
I like my current job. I am a Japanese Teacher and have been working for over 13 years in the same (American) institution.
私は今の仕事が好きです。私は日本語教師で、同じ（アメリカの）教育機関で13年以上働いてます。
I originally didn’t plan to be a teacher in America, but teaching Japanese is something I can do as a Non-English native speaker and as a person who has a language-related degree in America.😅
元々、私はアメリカで教師になるつもりは無かったです。何というか、英語が母国語では無くて、語学関連の学位を持っている人として、アメリカで出来る仕事がこれだったという感じかな。(ある意味の消去式です…)😅
Many Non-English speakers start working in low positions and receiving low salaries if they don’t have good connections and enough experience. My Japanese friends changed their careers in America for a living. (My friends became Nurses. Nursing job is the most popular for foreign women. Other in-demand jobs are IT professionals, Finance, Construction, and Business-related.)
良いコネや十分な経験が無い多くの非英語話者は、低いポジションや安い給料で働き始めます。私の日本人の友人達は、生活のためにアメリカで転職しました（友人達は看護師に。看護師は外国人女性達に最も人気のある仕事で、他にIT専門職、金融、建築関係、ビジネス関連職等が入りやすいです。)
My husband (Spanish speaker) and I (Japanese speaker) are both Non-English native speakers. A long time ago, he changed his job from an IT Programmer to a Mechanical Engineer. Being a Programmer was good, but it was always competitive and very busy. He wanted to have a stable life like 8 AM to 4 PM. The good thing is he likes the current job.🙂
夫も私も、英語が母国語では無いです。だいぶ前ですが、夫はITプログラマーから機械系エンジニアに転職しました。プログラマーはいい仕事でしたけど、常に競争があって、とにかく多忙。彼は朝8時から夕方4時までのような安定した生活を望んでいたので、今の仕事は気に入っているようです。🙂
The teaching job is not my first job in America. First, I worked in the Asian supermarket, the next was in the Japanese Restaurant and Travel Agency. In Japan, I have worked many different jobs, such as Tutor, Student Coordinator for exchange students, Mail Sorter in the post office, Night Shift Cashier in a convenience store, Sales Associate in retail shops, Office Administrator in several offices, etc… I think I had experienced over 20 jobs.
私の場合ですが、教える仕事がアメリカで最初の仕事では無いです。最初はアジア系スーパーで働いて、次に日本食レストランと旅行代理店で働きました。日本では、家庭教師、留学生のコーディネーター、郵便局で郵便物仕分け、コンビニエンスストアの夜勤、小売店の販売員、いくつかのオフィスの事務職等々…20以上の仕事を経験したと思います。
Working in the supermarket and Japanese restaurant was not bad. The hourly pay for the supermarket was low. At that time (about 14–15 years ago), I made $8 per hour. But I had tips and employee discounts. I had a 25% discount and could get fresh seafood by a special route.
意外にも、スーパーと日本食レストランの仕事は悪くなかったです。あ、スーパーの時給は安かったかな。当時（14～15年ほど前）は、時給8ドル。でも、チップがあったし、従業員割引もありました。スーパーの商品が全品25％引きで買えたし、新鮮な魚介類も特別なルートで安く手に入れることが出来たので。
As I wrote before, my Dad was a sushi chef and owned his restaurant for a long time in Japan. Therefore I was more familiar with the food related industry than other industries.
前にも書きましたが、私の父が元寿司職人で、日本で長く店を経営していました。そのため、他の業界よりもよく知っていたせいか、入りやすかったです。
The restaurant was family-oriented. The owner and his family were so nice to me. I had delicious free employee meals for lunch and dinner. I worked in an upscale restaurant and experienced all duties. The tip was very good. Each customer gave me over 20%.🙏
私が働いていたレストランは、家族経営でした。オーナーと彼の家族が、私の面倒をよくみてくださったので嬉しかったです。ランチとディナーは、いつも美味しいまかない食(従業員さん達が食べる料理)で無料。高級レストランで、一通りの業務を経験しました。チップも良くて、どのお客さんも20％以上のチップをくれました。🙏
After that, I became a tour coordinator (guide) for tourists. That job was very busy and stressful. Some tourists were so nice but not all of them. Some of them complained to me like “Our hotel room is dirty and noisy!” and “My suitcase has a scratch!”…additionally, my schedule was always irregular.😵💫
その後、観光客向けのツアーコーディネーター（ガイド）になったのですが、これが忙しくて、ストレスがある仕事でした。とても親切な観光客もいたのですが、全員では無かったです。例えば、「ホテルの部屋が汚くてうるさい！」とか、「スーツケースに傷がある！」とか文句を言ってくる人達がいまして…しかも、私のスケジュールがいつも不規則。😵💫
Like my husband, I wanted to have a stable life. So I started finding a new job except for office related jobs. I knew that I was not good at working in the office. My personality does not fit for the office job at all.
夫と同じように、私も安定した生活を送りたくて、オフィスワーク以外の新しい仕事を探し始めました。私はオフィスワークには向いていないと、自分で分かっていましたから。性格的に、ホント合わないんです。
One day I knew that the local language school was looking for a Japanese (native speaker) teacher. I immediately sent my resume, cover letter and two recommendations, and I went to an interview. Luckily I got a teaching position as a Japanese Instructor. Soon after that, I got an offer to teach in a different institution and has continued until now.
ある日、地元の語学学校が日本語の（日本語を母国語とする）先生を募集していることを知りました。すぐに履歴書とカバーレター、推薦状を2通送って、面接を受けることに。ありがたいことに、日本語講師のポジションを得ることが出来ました。その後すぐに別の教育機関でも教える仕事のオファーをいただいて、現在に至ります。
I like teaching so I want to continue as long as possible. Also, I liked working in the restaurant. If I have a chance, I want to open my own restaurant or school in the future. Perhaps I will talk to my kids and decide…!?
教えることが好きです。だから、できるだけ長く続けたいかな。レストランで働くことも好きでしたけど。チャンスがあれば、将来的に自分のお店や学校を開いてみたいという夢があります。まだ先の話なので、子供達と一緒に話し合って決めようかな…どうなるかなぁ！？
